Ballroom dance shoes and other tips 2
Suggestions for Ballroom
Dance Shoes 2
Heel Height: With official
ballroom dancing, women wear 3" heels for
European dance and 2" heels for the Latin
dances. Heels can actually assist with the
stretch that is needed in the European dances,
as well as to be up on the toes for the turns
and spins that are accomplished with all forms
of ballroom dances. However, in any situation,
women should not wear heels that are any higher
than what they are used to. If a women rarely
wears heels, she should find a pair of shoes
where the heels are only about 1" to 1-1/2"
high. However, if a women is used to wearing
heels, a 2" to 2-1/2" pair should be fine. Keep
in mind that you will be participating in a wide
variety of dances and anything higher than
2-1/2" may not be conducive to some rhythms. In
any case, do not buy heels that are over 1/2"
higher than the heels you have previously worn
because you do not want to learn to walk in high
heels while on the dance floor.
Character Shoes; Ballet Shoes, etc.: Character
shoes may be used in ballroom dance, but ballet
shoes are not necessarily what you should use in
ballroom dance. However, if you own ballet
shoes, you may be used to dancing on your toes;
in such a case, you may be fine wearing them for
ballroom dance. In fact, some women prefer their
Chinese flats for ballroom dancing. The main
feature to consider is the sole of the shoe.
Test the shoes first to make sure that they are
not too sticky or too slippery. Heels will help
shorter women in their dance, but how much they
help depends upon the individual dancer.
