Ballroom dancing contracts
Read Before you Sign on the
Line
When you are searching for
a dance studio in which to sign up for dance
lessons, you need to know the ramifications of
signing a contract for a series of lessons. You
may not want to continue with dance lessons
because you are not satisfied with the
instructor or for some other reasons so you need
to be careful before signing a contract.
Some dance studios, and even independent dance
teachers, may require that their students sign a
contract for a specific amount of lessons at a
set price. This contract could include private
lessons, group lessons, dance parties, workshops
or even weekend dance instruction or activities.
Before you sign the contract, make sure that you
will be able to participate in all of the
classes and activities, and of course, make sure
that you can afford it, as you probably won't be
entitled to a refund.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had received
several complaints about the practices of dance
studios regarding their contracts, etc. So it
issued a warning in 1992 regarding the sales
practices of some of the dance studios. The FTC
recommended that consumers shop around for dance
lessons in order to avoid problems that may
arise with the contracts of the dance studios
and individual instructors. You can read the
suggestions of the FTC on their website.
Of course, do not allow the warning to prevent
you from taking ballroom dance lessons. However,
it is best to take ballroom dance classes
without having to sign a formal contract. You
should be able to find a dance studio or
instructor who will offer dance lessons on a pay
as you go basis without having to sign a formal
contract.
