Lessons and Partners 2
Continue: Partners or not? And Lessons
Most beginners find the
experience of learning dance steps together
offers a stimulating, fun and challenging
experience, as well as the fact that they may
come away with a whole new set of friends. After
all, there is plenty of social interaction in a
group of dancers who are there to learn a new
activity and have fun while doing so.
Dance instructors generally recommend that you
begin your journey into the world of social
dance by attending group classes with other
dancers who have the same level of dance
experience (which is sometimes no experience).
However, if you feel you want to get a head
start, you might consider taking one or two
private lessons. This just may provide you with
the confidence you need to join a group dance
class. Or if you start with a group class, and
fall behind, because you have had to miss a
couple of classes, or find that you just can't
master a particular step, you should consider a
couple of private lessons so that you can catch
up.
Dance steps and patterns are emphasized more
than technique in groups lessons, so you may
need a private lesson to master a particular
technique before proceeding with group lessons.
Some men, in particular, may need a private
lesson or two in order to lead his partner
through the figures that are taught in group
classes. Women may discover that a private
lesson can help them with grace and agility to
master the movements that they learn in a group
class.
So, as you can now determine, there are
advantages and disadvantages to group and
private lessons, therefore, you may find that
you need both at one time or another.
